Ian T. Hammett is Of Counsel with the firm. He joined Mason, Griffin & Pierson, P.C. in 2018 after practicing with other private law firms in the greater Mercer County area of New Jersey for over thirty years, including over fifteen years as a solo practitioner.

Ian is a member of the firm’s Estates and Trusts Practice Group. He has been representing clients in estate planning and estate administration matters since he began practicing law in Princeton in 1987.

In representing clients in estate planning matters, Ian takes a holistic approach, assisting his clients in developing comprehensive estate plans implemented typically through Last Wills and Testaments, Trust Agreements, Powers of Attorneys and Advance Directives for Health Care, in cooperation and collaboration with the clients’ other professionals, such as accountants, financial advisors, and business consultants. He works with his clients and their other professionals to confirm that the goals of the developed estate plans are effectively implemented across all of their personal assets, whether probate or non-probate.

With respect to estate administration matters, Ian assists clients as they carry out their fiduciary responsibilities as personal representatives of decedent’s estates (probate or intestate) or as trustees under various types of testamentary trusts or trust agreements. Ian assists estate administration clients in managing and undertaking the various aspects of estate administration, including identification of assets, both probate and non-probate, valuation of assets, payment of claims, estate administration expenses and taxes, sale or distribution of assets, determination of beneficiaries and beneficiaries’ shares of the estate, and final distribution of assets.

Additionally, in the practice area of Estates and Trusts, Ian has represented clients in related litigation, including contested probate matters, Will contests, and guardianship actions.

Ian is also a member of the firm’s Real Estate Practice Group. He has represented clients throughout the State of New Jersey in all phases of real estate law, including real estate transactions, both commercial and residential, since 1991. In addition to his transactional legal work, Ian has assisted clients with other aspects of real estate law, including preparation and/or review of leasing agreements, property transfers, and related litigation before the Superior Court of New Jersey (enforcement of contracts, quiet title actions, partition and other actions to determine ownership interests in real property, commercial landlord/tenant matters and ejectment actions).

Ian is also a member of the firm’s Business and Banking Practice Group. He represents clients in the planning, forming and operation of small and medium sized business entities and professional practices. He also assists clients with their business succession planning and transfer of ownership interests in these small and medium sized business entities.

Ian is a qualified New Jersey State Mediator under New Jersey Court Rule 1:40. Ian limits his mediation practice to Probate related matters in the greater Mercer County area.

Ian has had a long and rewarding career volunteering in various community organizations, including Lambertville New Hope Rotary, Hopewell Valley Lions Club,and as a high school swimming official, a youth sports official in baseball and lacrosse, and as a youth sports coach for various baseball, basketball and soccer leagues.
