About

Ian T. Hammett is a director with the firm. He joined Mason, Griffin & Pierson, P.C. in 2018 after practicing with other private law firms in the greater Mercer County area of New Jersey for over thirty years, including over fifteen years as a solo practitioner.

Ian is a member of the firm’s Estates and Trusts Practice Group. He has been representing clients in estate planning and estate administration matters since he began practicing law in Princeton in 1987.

In representing clients in estate planning matters, Ian takes a holistic approach, assisting his clients in developing comprehensive estate plans implemented typically through Last Wills and Testaments, Trust Agreements, Powers of Attorneys and Advance Directives for Health Care, in cooperation and collaboration with the clients’ other professionals, such as accountants, financial advisors, and business consultants. He works with his clients and their other professionals to confirm that the goals of the developed estate plans are effectively implemented across all of their personal assets, whether probate or non-probate.

With respect to estate administration matters, Ian assists clients as they carry out their fiduciary responsibilities as personal representatives of decedent’s estates (probate or intestate) or as trustees under various types of testamentary trusts or trust agreements. Ian assists estate administration clients in managing and undertaking the various aspects of estate administration, including identification of assets, both probate and non-probate, valuation of assets, payment of claims, estate administration expenses and taxes, sale or distribution of assets, determination of beneficiaries and beneficiaries’ shares of the estate, and final distribution of assets.

Additionally, in the practice area of Estates and Trusts, Ian has represented clients in related litigation, including contested probate matters, Will contests, and guardianship actions.

Ian is also a member of the firm’s Real Estate Practice Group and Business Banking Practice Group.

Ian has had a long and rewarding career volunteering in various community and civic organizations and as a high school sports  and youth sports official.
